Service Description

In this class, we will explore different surface decorations on greenware working with underglazes. Techniques covered will include sgraffito, carving, paper resist, and image transfers. We will use tiles to try out different techniques, before using these new techniques to create a finished piece. Decorating Techniques Include: *Stamping- using store bought stamps as well as creating your own with foam and cardboard *Using a dense sponge with underglaze as an inkresist. Tracing images on tracing paper, backing w pad. *Stickers, washi tape, newspaper and Tyvek as resist packing tape to create reusable ways to transfer images *Tracing images on tracing paper, backing with packing tape to create reusable ways to transfer images *Different methods of carving into clay- stylus, pin tool, exacto knife, small and larger carving tools *Mishima- A surface decoration that includes inlaying a slip or an underglaze into an incised or carved line on the surface of greenware. *Sgraffito- A surface decoration technique in which a layer of slip or underglaze is carved through or incised to reveal a ground of contrasting color. *Carving through wax resist to inlay different colors. *Woodcut/ linoleum cut style *Newsprint with underglaze transfer *Drawing with slip trails *Making bisque stamps
