Afternoon Raku Pottery Workshop (24Sum8)
Experience the Fire and Beauty of Raku Pottery
Service Description
Raku pottery is a Japanese technique that dates back to the 16th century. It is highly regarded for its beauty and has become popular worldwide for its historical significance and its artistic appeal. Attending our Raku workshop can be a captivating and rewarding experience. This is a 3 hour workshop. You will be glazing a piece of bisque ware then placing that piece into a kiln where we will bring the temperature up to 1860 degrees, then remove it from the kiln and place into a combustible materials. After reducing the oxygen and cooling it, we will clean the piece and you will be able to take it home that day. You will be given a second piece of bisque wear to either glaze or do a horse hair burn. This is a process that we bring the pieces up to temperature, remove and then place hair onto the piece to leave an impression. Again we let this cool before cleaning and waxing. Things you need to know: • You must be at least 12 years old to attend. All 12-18 year olds must be accompanied by a participating adult. • You must be able to take directions well. This is a high temperature process. Our instructors will be there to keep you safe, which means you must follow their instructions. • You must wear non-flammable clothing. 100% cotton clothing, long sleeves and long pants/jeans will protect your legs and arms from hot temperatures. • Long hair must be tied back, and it is helpful to have a bandana or a baseball hat covering your head. • You must wear closed toe shoes. • Remember Raku is a fun and hands on experience, however, this is a smokey process so be prepared. We recommend wearing older clothes that you don't mind getting dirty and smelly. • Bring plenty of fluids for hydration.
